FESTIVAL IN 'T WOUDT

In November 2005 the Dutch Queen Beatrix visited the small town 't Woudt'
where she listened to two musical compositions, performed by twelve members
of the three local brass bands.

'Festival in 't Woudt' was one of these compositions.
It was not only composed for the Festival in 't Woudt, but also for the ballet:
TVbeat. The author of that ballet (Uwe Warneke) asked me to arrange this
piece for guitar solo as well.
The music is accessible for the audience: cheerful music, but for the guitarist
it is rather difficult to play.

FLEUR
Part of the ballet 'TVbeat'

The ballet TVbeat is based on a modern fairy tale about the Real World and the Media World. Would it be possible to mix both worlds?
The sparkling love story between Leon and Fleur seems to prove that the Real World and the Media World are getting along wonderfully, but on the end we find Fleur, standing on the beach. Left alone, weeping, and realizing she lost everything.

This work for guitar solo expresses how Fleur deeply regrets her wrong decisions, how she still loves Leon, and how much this love hurts her, for she knows she lost him forever. The style of composing I used for 'Fleur' is tonal, and very guitaristic. This means it looks difficult on first sight, but studying it, the notes will easy be found and remembered. Some places are not really difficult, but unusual, here the fingering numbers will help. Since this is ballet music, the music is very expressive and easy on the ear, as well the guitarist as the audience will be able to recognize Fleur's emotional thoughts about the past and her fear for the future.

This work did win the first price in the composing contest of the 8th International Guitar Festival of Corfu in 2005.

A rather easy piece for solo guitar, suitable for guitar starters.

DOLIA

A short piece for solo guitar, for the not yet advanced guitarist.

The name 'Dolia' comes from my Dutch novel 'De verlorenen' (The Lost Ones).
Dolia is the name of the first city Larix visites in the fantasy world Elmontestratia.
Larix sure is amazed by the sight of it, but she worries too much about her little friend,
Gijs, who is lost, therefore she can't really enjoy it.

I quite often get a request for adding a tablature with my music.
Therefore I decided to try it. Dolia is available in two versions: notes or tablature.

THEME WITH VARIATIONS

The character of the music is classical.
The melody of the theme is almost like pop-music, but it deepens in the variations
and ends in silent intimity.
The music is not difficult to play. Most guitarists will be able to play it without any
problems after four years of guitar lessons.

The music of Ruta sounds classical, and is suitable for the same guitarists
as mentioned above: it is not difficult to play.

The Prelude and Fantasia are rather difficult to play.

THE HEAVENLY HARPIST

The Heavenly Harpist is a three part composition for solo guitar.
Subject of this piece of music is the Erasmus Bridge in the middle of the Dutch city Rotterdam. The bridge is shaped like a huge harp.
Wouldn't it be wonderful whenever an angel would come down from heaven to play heavenly music for the inhabitants of Rotterdam?

THE HERB GARDEN IN LEUVEN

Sixteen short pieces for solo guitar.
Predominantly expressive music about the trees, the flowers, the fish in the pond and the Belgium pomologist Van Mons. Some of the pieces are more abstract.
Not difficult to moderately difficult.

Only one of those sixteen pieces is available in PDF.
The other fifteen will follow later.

Two Guitars - Guitar Duo

A JOURNEY TO THE INTERIOR OF THE EARTH

In a five-part piece, performed by two guitars, we follow the book 'A Journey to<
the Interior of the Earth' by Jules Verne.
The music is quite difficult to play, but the fingerings in the music probably help
enough to make the music pleasant to play.
The character of the music is moderately modern, sometimes following the
story, other times more abstract.
All together the duration of the music is about twelve minutes.

VLIELAND SONATA

Vlieland is a very small island in the North Sea, to the west of the Dutch Province Friesland. On this beautiful vacation-island I composed the Vlieland Sonata for two guitars.
The four parts of this Sonata are:

I - Oyster-catchers at the North Sea
II - Seals on a sandy bank
III - Two atalantas at the Dutch Wadden Sea
IV - Parnassias just past the 'Posthuys'.

Although originally composed for two guitars, it is possible to play this sonata with a guitar and a piano too, for I made an adaptation for piano of the second guitar part.

Expressive music.
Not difficult.

EPIPOGON SONATA

A four-part sonata for two guitars, the subject is Eli Heimans' quest for a rare orchid.
The four parts are named:

I - Heading for Harzburg - a ten hour journey.
II - A stroll through the valley.
III - Climbing, searching, and jumping at the foot of the mountain.
IV - The Epipogon found. A pale princess on a dense carpet of moss in the dark fir wood.

Allthough originally composed for two guitars, it is possible to play this sonata with a guitar and a piano too, for I made an adaptation for piano of the second guitar part. Expressive music.
Not difficult.

MODEST MUSSORGSKY - GUITAR DUO

The Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky composed in the 19th century many musical pieces for piano solo. Nine of them are brought together in a book named: 'Musical Portraits'.
The sound of this music is very surprising, it almost sounds like some of Debussy's music, dreamy, vague, but at the same time firm and strong.
I found two pieces in this book suitable for guitarduo: 'The sewer', and 'Meditation'. The adaptations I made are not easy to play, but it's very much worth while to take the trouble to study it. For guitar duo's a beautiful chance to become acquainted with Modest Mussorgsky.

JOSEPH HAYDN - GUITAR DUO

Allegro Moderato Cantabile

Joseph Haydn composed 83 string quartets.
Most of this beautiful music is typical string quartet music, but by studying the
scores I discovered a piece which is even at first sight extremely suitable for
guitar.
To me the music sounds like guitar music, written down for strings.
It was very easy to make an arrangement: I only had to change the key from
E-flat to E, and to bring Haydn's notes together for two guitars.
The sound of this piece reminds of Sor's or Carulli's music; very classical and easy
on the ear. Still it surprises by its modulations and unexpected changes, always
coming home again to the first theme.

This adaptation for two guitars is the first part of string quartet opus 33 no. 2.
In most lists it's called the 38th string quartet.

THE WITCH HAZEL

A canon for three guitars, suitable for guitarists after about four years of
guitar lessons. The music is not difficult to play, on places where the guitarist
